Non-Immigrant B visa Non-B

The temporary-stay visa category issued to a foreign national entering Thailand to work or to do business; it permits entry and stay only, and the right to work comes separately from the Department of Employment.

IN PRACTICE

What it means in practice

The visa is applied for at a Thai embassy or consulate abroad, and in some cases the category can be changed inside Thailand. The application is carried by the company's documents: certificate, shareholder list, financial statements and tax filings. The common mistake is treating the visa as permission to work. It is not, and starting work before the permit issues carries penalties for the employee and the employer alike. The stay granted on entry also has an end date; remaining beyond it is a separate step, applied for as an extension of stay.
