Extension of stay
Permission from the Immigration Bureau to remain in Thailand beyond the period currently granted, whether that period was given on entry or on a previous extension, applied for before it ends and decided on a stated ground — employment, marriage, dependency — which must be consistent with the visa category held. It is not the issue of a new visa.

What it means in practice
The company's side of the file has to be current: financial statements, tax filings and the list of Thai employees on social security. The officer decides on the ground relied on, not on the visa in the passport. Leaving it to the last days is a risk, because once the permission has ended the ordinary extension route is no longer available, and advice should be taken at once: what remains open depends on the individual facts. The extension is tied to its ground as well — when the employment ends, the ground falls away even though time remains on the stamp. Under section 35 of the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 an extension on the ordinary grounds — employment, marriage — is granted for up to one year at a time; certain special categories, such as investment or promoted businesses, work to different rules.
