Re-entry permit

A permit obtained before departure that preserves an existing permission to stay, so that the holder re-enters on the same permission instead of losing it at the border; it is issued in single-entry and multiple-entry form.

IN PRACTICE

What it means in practice

The permit is bought before leaving, at an immigration office or at the airport. Leaving without one ends the permission to stay: and an extension already granted has to be applied for again from the beginning. Not everyone needs one, however — some visas and some permissions already carry re-entry, and a blanket rule misleads the people who hold them. The position turns on what the passport actually says; the choice between the single and multiple forms follows the number of trips genuinely planned.
